KUCHING: National diver Traisy Vivian Tukiet is modest about her quest to improve her world ranking and ultimately to win medals at the upcoming 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Her main focus now is to do well in the Asian Games to be held in Incheon, South Korea and the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland both of which will be held in 2014.

“My coach acknowledges that I have to improve especially on the reverse dive, front dives and inward dives,” she said during the recent DBNA reception dinner.

Traisy recalled that since she started to take up the sport those areas of weakness were identified by the coach that she has not fully overcome.

“Diving-coaches are at the ones at very heart of the sport…their role is critical to how the sport functions at all levels and I am happy that the government has given recognition of the importance of coaches,” she said.

According to her, the recognition given to the coaches as role models and mentors needs to be enhanced because it is often the case that junior athletes’ commitment and enthusiasm for a sport is based almost entirely on the quality of their coach.

“In many ways Malaysia’s future sporting success is up to our coaches and training officials,” Traisy said.

Quoting a good example, she said world’s fastest sprinter Usain Bolt of Jamaica who is trained by Glenn Mills describes the coach as a father figure: “You have to believe in your coach.

“My coach is the backbone of my training.

“He gives me my game plan and guides me regarding what to and what not to do.

“He is a very important part of my life.”
