Sarawak girls finished 10th in national youth championship

KUCHING: Sarawak girls ended their campaign in the 48th Maba National Youth under 18 basketball championship in 10th place after they beat Pahang 50-40 at Han Chiang Stadium in Pulau Pinang on Thursday.

In the play-off for 10th and 11th placing, Sarawak came back from 7-12 in the first quarter to lead Pahang 21-18 in the second quarter. In the third quarter, Pahang were able to level the score 30-30 although they failed to score any three-pointers but Sarawak hung on to the six-point lead at the end of third quarter.

At the end of fourth quarter, Sarawak scored 20 more points for the victory, with Sherlyn Liew contributing 12 points and Debbie Ting 11 points.

The state’s boys did not fare well either and lost 61-73 to defending champions Kelantan in the play-off for ninth to 12th placing.

Sarawak trailed their opponent 22-3 in the first quarter before reducing the deficit to 14-22.

They were able to level the score 30-30 in the second quarter but at the end of the quarter they were still four points behind but Kelantan stretched their lead to 13 points (55-42) in the third quarter and wrapped up the game winning by a 12-point margin.

National youth cager Su Leh King could not salvage Sarawak’s hope despite becoming the top marksman, scoring 21 points with six rebounds.
