KUALA LUMPUR: Kulim-Bandar Baharu MP Datuk Zulkifli Noordin has filed a defamation suit against Senator Dr Syed Husin Ali over the latter’s book entitled “Memoir Perjuangan Politik Syed Husin Ali” (Memoirs of Syed Husin Ali’s Political Struggle).

The writ of summons was filed last Friday at the registry of the Civil High Court through The Chambers of Kamarul Hisham & Hasnal Rezua.

In his statement of claim, Zulkifli claimed that Syed Husin had falsely and maliciously published and caused to be published defamatory words against him.

Zulkifli said the words implied that he had offered to Parti Keadilan Rakyat and/or Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in April 2008, after the 12th general election, his resignation as the MP for Kulim-Bandar Baharu to enable Anwar to contest in the by-election.

He alleged that the words implied he abetted with Umno to make allegations against PKR and Anwar and allowed himself to be used for the political agenda of Umno.

Zulkifli claimed the book was sold at major book stores and the publication of the words had damaged his reputation, image and good name.

He is seeking general, exemplary and aggravated damages, interest and costs and an injunction to prevent the defendant or his agents from continuing to publish the defamatory words.

On Jan 27, Syed Husin, 76, the former deputy chairman of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), filed a suit against Utusan Melayu (Malaysia) Bhd, Utusan Group Editor-in-Chief Datuk Abdul Aziz Ishak and Zulkifli over an article in Utusan Malaysia dated Nov 20 last year entitled ‘Zul Noordin Nafi Dakwaan Syed Husin’ (Zul Noordin Dismisses Allegation of Syed Husin).

The court will hear the suit on Thursday.

The case was today fixed for case management before Judicial Commissioner Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera and counsel Hasnal Rezua Merican, representing Zulkifli, and N.

Surendran, for Syed Husin.

Hasnal Rezua also told the court that he had filed an application to consolidate the suit filed by Zulkfili and Syed Husin on the premise both parties involved in the two cases were the same and involved the same legal issues, witnesses and statements. — Bernama
