Make new retirement age voluntary, urges Cuepacs chief

KUCHING: A civil servant who feels that he is unfit to continue working till the age of 60 should opt to retire earlier.

In voicing this opinion, Congress of Union Employees in the Public and Civil Service (Cuepacs) president Datuk Omar Osman said this was to prevent them from affecting the overall performance of the public service.

“The government now wants to transform the civil service but if among us, there are those who are not fully fit, then we may not be able to give our best.

“At the same time, if we cannot deliver up to the mark, we cannot expect the government to give additional incentives to us,” he said.

In this respect, he suggested that it be made compulsory for those intending to continue working in the civil service till they are 60 years old to undergo a full medical examination.

Omar, who is a member of the Special Review Commission on Civil Service Transformation (SKMTPA), told the media this when met at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar here yesterday.

On the government’s side, he said it was the hope of Cuepacs that their previous requests would be given due consideration during the tabling of the budget next month.

“There are a number of things which we feel are already long overdue such as the housing and regional allowances, especially for Sabah and Sarawak.

“The housing allowance, for instance, has not been reviewed over the last 15 years and since the government appears to be financially sound now, there is no reason why our requests cannot be given due consideration,” he said.

He said only by doing so would the government be seen as moving in tandem with its civil service transformation programme.

“It cannot be denied that welfare is very important whether for government linked companies, private or public sectors. For the employees to improve their productivity their welfare must also be well taken care of,” he said.
