Youth to be tried for robbery

KUCHING: A youth charged with robbing a China national woman in May is to be tried in the Sessions Court here in October and November this year.

Mohd Shartir Amini Othman, 20, from Kampung Segedup will be tried on Oct 18, 19, 25 and Nov 1 and 2 this year.

Mohd Shartir allegedly robbed the victim of her handbag containing money and important documents in front of an eatery at Song Thian Cheok Road at about 6pm on July 19 this year.

Yesterday the accused, who maintained his innocence, appeared before Sessions Court Judge Amelati Parnell who released him on extended bail pending the trial.

He will be tried under Section 394 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum 20 years’ imprisonment upon conviction.

According to the facts of the case, the complainant and two friends were walking along the shop’s five-foot-way when her handbag was snatched from behind, causing her to fall down while the two suspects attempted to flee on a motorbike.

The handbag was passed to an accomplice named Mohd Shartir who was caught by members of the public.

In the same court room, an odd job worker from Lundu charged with assaulting a man was re-charged after his discharge (not acquitted) on Monday.

Saimond Siul, 38, who hails from Kampung Jantan in Lundu maintained his innocence when charged with assaulting Panggit Gerunal, 22, at Kampung Jantan at about 8.30pm on May 13 this year.

Saimond allegedly used a machete to hit Panggit in the village compound after a misunderstanding.

On Monday, Judge Amelati decided to discharge him as the victim who is the key witness could not attend the trial during a certain period because his mother was ill.

Saimond’s charge comes under Section 326 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum 20 years’ jail or whipping upon conviction.
