SHAH ALAM: A businessman was sentenced to six years’ jail and fined RM1 million, in default six years’ jail, by the Sessions Court here yesterday after finding him guilty of bribing a police officer two years ago.
Judge Asmadi Hussin handed down the sentence on Wan Muhammad Azlan Wan Mahamod after finding that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubts against the prosecution’s case.
The judge also sentenced Wan Muhammad Azlan’s uncle, Mohd Kamal Mohd Zin, 41, to five years’ jail and fined RM500,000, in default two years’ jail, after finding him guilty of abetting his nephew in committing the offence.
Wan Muhammad Azlan, 24, was charged with offering a bribe of RM100,000 to Inspector V.Mohana Sundaram, from the Subang Jaya Narcotic Crime Investigation Division, as an inducement to not hand him over to the Kelantan police for investigation in a drug-related offence. The offence was committed at the Narcotic Crime Investigation Division of the Subang Jaya Police, Bukit Puchong police station, about 7.30pm on Sept 27, 2010.
He was also charged with giving the bribe to Mohana Sundaram through Mohd Kamal for the same purpose at the same place about 1.45pm on Sept 28, 2010.
Asmadi allowed a stay of the jail sentence following a request by both the accused pending their appeal, but rejected their application to delay payment of the fine.
He increased bail on Wan Muhammad Azlan from RM60,000 to RM80,000 and Mohd Kamal, from RM30,000 to RM40,000. Both of them were also ordered to report themselves at the Kota Baharu office of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on the first Sunday of every month.
Deputy public prosecutor from MACC, Mohd Zaki Mohd Salleh, and prosecuting officer Wan Ahmad Nidzam Wan Omar prosecuted while lawyers Ahmad Zaidi Zainal and Hanif Hassan represented Wan Muhammad Azlan and Mohd Kamal, respectively. — Bernama
