KUALA LUMPUR: China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd (CHEC), the parent company of CHEC Construction Sdn Bhd, which built the Second Penang Bridge, did not build the ramp of the viaduct of a bridge in China which collapsed on Aug 24.

Media reports claimed that CHEC and its parent company, China Communications and Construction Company Ltd (CCCC), had undertaken some construction jobs in the collapsed ramp of the viaduct connecting the main body of Harbin Yangmingtan Bridge in Heilongjiang province.

Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd, the concessionaire for the Second Penang Bridge, said it received a clarification letter from CHEC Construction (M) Sdn Bhd to dismiss the reports.

The collapsed ramp was part of the Qunli Viaduct link, which connects the main body of the Yangmingtan Bridge.

“CHEC and its parent company, CCCC, were not involved in any construction of the Qunli Viaduct Link project, as well as, the collapsed ramp of the viaduct bridge section as reported,” Jambatan Kedua said in a statement.

In reality, Jambatan Kedua said CCCC was involved in the construction of the main navigation span, which is a suspension bridge spanning 427 meters across the Songhua River.

As the appointed design and build contractor for the Second Penang Bridge, CHEC has been following stringent design and construction codes, standards, guidelines and best industrial practices.

“It is also engaging with Jambatan Kedua, several dependant organisations and third parties consultants to continuously monitor the design, construction, safety, environment and other areas including design auditing, site auditing and periodic progress reports.

It hoped the explanation would clarify any confusion or misleading reports related to the incident in China and the involvement of CHEC and CCCC. — Bernama
