KUCHING: A woman suspected to be involved in the death of a 59-year-old man at Sungai Moyan in Batu Kawa last Saturday has been placed on five-day remand to facilitate police investigation.

The 59-year-old suspect appeared before a Court Registrar who ordered her to be produced in court again on Sept 3 upon the expiry of the remand order.

She was arrested by a team from district police headquarters at her house not far from the murder scene on Wednesday morning.

The case is being investigated under Section 304a of the Penal Code for culpable homicide (manslaughter), which provides for a maximum 20 years’ jail or fine, or both upon conviction.

The suspect was represented by Fung Lee Fook.

Meanwhile, a Magistrates’ Court adjourned hearing of a case involving a teenager charged with trafficking 209 grammes of cannabis to Sept 27.

Magistrate Maris Agan adjourned the trial as requested by the prosecution because the chemist’s report on the drug was not yet ready.

She thus ordered the accused Azizul Azhar Ishak to continue to be remanded in prison as the offence was non-bailable.

Azizul, 21, from Jalan Sultan Tengah, allegedly possessed the drug for sale at a house in Taman Sukma about 11am on Aug 17.

Drug trafficking comes under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act, 1952, which provides for a mandatory death penalty upon conviction.

Inspector Austin Patrick Angkon prosecuted.
