KUCHING: LimKokWing student Ivan Tertius Joanis can now add a winning design to his portfolio when his treble clef cat won the first place in the World Animal Groove (WAG) Music Festival t-shirt design competition.

The final year graphic design student received five tickets to WAG Music Festival worth RM300, a t-shirt and a certificate.

Second and third prizes went to Petrus Alfred, who went home with a total of seven tickets worth RM420, two t-shirts and certificates.

The consolation prize went to Wong Ping Ping. She won two tickets worth RM120, a t-shirt and a certificate.

WAG Music Festival, which will take place on Oct 6, is organised by Sarawak Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA).

SSPCA president Dona Drury-Wee said t-shirts with the winning design will be put on sale shortly to create more visual awareness about the festival. They will also be available on the day of the festival itself.

“We are very pleased to see some really creative designs which incorporate elements of music and animals in an eye catching manner,” she said.

The competition was held with their event partner LimKokWing University of Creative Technology as part of the events leading up to the festival.

This is the first time the Sarawak SPCA is organising an event at such a scale, Wee added.

“It is to commemorate our 50th anniversary as well as to reach out to the youth of today to create greater awareness about abandoned animals and animal cruelty.”

“It is our hope in the near future to be able to start SSPCA Clubs in schools and institutes of higher learning so that we can educate students on the proper care of animals and pets, and to build a core group of volunteers who can assist us at the shelter and during events such as our offsite adoption days,” Wee said.

The big celebration will begin with the 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Oct 5. Donations are being accepted for those who wish to get tables and attend.

Money raised will go into building SSPCA’s new shelter, estimated to cost RM1.5 million.

Wee said that getting one and a half hour of rain last week resulted in the shelter being under nearly a foot of water.

“We are bracing for worse floods this year as we are now the only parcel of land that is five feet lower than the development around us. Any runoff water runs right to our shelter,” she said.

The WAG Music Festival will see a string of events, beginning with vendors and stalls selling pet related goods at 12pm. There will be a first ever multi-religious Pet Blessing from 4pm to 6pm where pet owners can bring their pets to BCCK to have them blessed.

The music festival will kick off at 7pm. There to entertain the crowd are Mellow Motive from Thailand, Victor Valdes from Mexico, Malaysian comedienne Bibi KayPoh, Hafiz of AF7, Inka Marka and DJ The Progen.

Tickets are available at the SSPCA shelter (082-618200), Atelier (019-8880610), Pet Care World (082-241188), Animal World Kingdom (082-578998/012-8051919), Pet Zone (082-253268/012-8880198), Amazing Pets (082-577779), IT Fusion (082-378023) and UComms (082-577911).
