Local claims trial to stealing car

KOTA KINABALU: A local man was charged in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday with stealing a RM40,000 car.

Dennis Mathew, 29, was accused of stealing the car belonging to a 55-year-old man from the porch of a house in Taman Hilton, Penampang about 6.30am on July 14, this year.

Mathew pleaded not guilty to the charge under Section 379A of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of between one and seven years and also liable to a fine upon conviction.

Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus set October 18 this year for trial and released the accused on RM3,000 bail, RM2,000 to be deposited with two local sureties.

In another case, an 18-year-old foreigner was fined RM4,700, in default, seven months’ jail, for possessing 1.14 grams of syabu.

Mohd Sabre Hiya admitted to have committed the offence about 1pm on June 8, this year in Kepayan.

He was convicted under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which provides for a fine not exceeding RM100,000, or a jail term of up to five years, or both, on conviction.

Balitus ordered Mohd Sabre to be referred to the Immigration Department for appropriate action for not possessing any valid travel document.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Zahiri Saad prosecuted.
