MIRI: The federal government has allocated Sarawak RM37.3 billion to cater to the infrastructure and early, technical and vocational education of its rural schools.

International Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Datuk Jacob Sagan said the big allocation was highlighted in Budget 2012 to help the community in the state.

“The government believes that creating a conducive environment for education would enable Malaysia to produce more international standard human capital,” Sagan said in his speech at the Merdeka Celebration 2012 in SMK Bakong near here over the weekend.

The government gave out education aid in the form of RM100 to each primary and secondary student including book vouchers for Form 6 and matriculation students. He said school fees were borne by the government as education was free.

“Hence parents should continue to support their children so they could excel in education.”

His text of speech was read by a political secretary to the Chief Minister Councillor Kijan Toynbee.

Sagan said when he visited SMK Long Lama last June, he noticed that the sixth formers were keen about studies.

“I believe with good education in SMK Bakong, our future generation can bring the Baram community to more success.”

Education Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced a RM2.8 million allocation for the repair of nine schools in Baram when he visited Lapok and Long Peluan recently.

He said he would continue to highlight the needs of rural schools to the federal level Education Ministry.
