KOTA KINABALU: A 21-year-old youth convicted of riding a motorcycle in a dangerous manner, was jailed for 30 days and fined RM5,000, in default two months’ jail, by the Traffic’s Court yesterday.

Magistrate Herlina Muse imposed the sentence on Dahayu Rubin after he pleaded guilty to committing the
offence along Jalan Kepayan about 2.40am on July 1, this year.

He was convicted under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333/87) which carries a jail term of up to five years, and a fine between RM5,000 and RM15,000, on conviction.

Prosecuting officer Assistant Superintendent Wilynthon E Watt told the court that during an operation mounted to curb road bullying activities, a group of persons were spotted to have ridden their motorcycles dangerously.

The accused was identified as one of those motorcyclists and was later arrested.

In another case, the court deferred the sentencing of Gilbert Giles Nurigi, 20, to Sept 6 after he pleaded guilty to committing a similar offence to allow the production of his probation report.

Gilbert was also identified to have ridden a motorcycle dangerously along Jalan Kepayan on the same day at about 2.30am.

He was released on RM1,500 bail deposited with two local sureties, pending disposal of the case.

The court was informed that Gilbert attempted to escape apprehsion by riding the machine against the traffic flow.
