Table-tennis squad stranded at quarter-final stage

LONDON: The progress of Malaysia’s paralympic table-tennis squad at the ongoing London Paralympic Games came to a halt in the quarter-final stage, when they lost 1-3 to Ukraine.

However, the achievement of the players was described as the best by national paralympic squad coach Ng Tong.

“Their style of playing is improving, and good. The Ukraine team is ranked third in the world, and maybe, there was a little pressure among our players.

“Although they are ranked relatively low, their performances were very encouraging. Maybe, I will discuss with the National Sports Council to formulate a new training programme for them,” he told Bernama yesterday.

Meanwhile, Mohamad Azwar described his performance in the game as one which showed improvement.

“A little disappointed, but I am satisfied with the performance. No doubt that the Ukraine players are more experienced.

“I will continue with the training. My target after this, is the Paralympic Games in the next four years. To me, my participation in London is a breakthrough,” he said. — Bernama
