JAKARTA: Relations and cooperation between the people of Malaysia and Indonesia will be further enhanced through the setting up of the Malaysia-Indonesia People’s Friendship Foundation (YIRMI) recently.

YIRMI information chief Sabaruddin Ahmad Sabri said for a start, a get to know programme for arts and cultural practitioners from both countries to compare notes would be held in Yogyakarta on Sept 18.

“YIRMI will be involved in various fields, including arts and cultural heritage, information, community programme, economic, educational, and language with the hope of improving relations between the people of the two countries, apart from strengthening the Malay culture in the archipelago,” he told reporters here.

Sabaruddin said YIRMI, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), would spur community programmes through the involvement of the people of the two countries by stepping up networks of cooperation in information sharing through NGOs, community groups and the media.

YIRMI will also be involved in campaigns, research and exhibitions that can raise awareness and friendship between the people of Malaysia and Indonesia in various fields, he added.

Teachers and students exchange programmes through NGOs from both countries are also in the offing, he added. –Bernama
