Driver gets 12 years’ jail for possession of cannabis

SHAH ALAM: A 53-year-old man was sentenced to 12 years in prison by the High Court here yesterday after he pleaded guilty to an alternative charge of possessing 973 grammes of cannabis, March last year.

Judge Datuk Akhtar Tahir spared Abd Aziz Masran the cane however due to his age.

Abd Aziz initially pleaded not guilty under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

But he changed his plea to guilty after the prosecution offered him an alternative charge under Section 6 of the same Act.

He committed the offence near the access road into Taman Sri Manjung, Semenyih, Kajang.

Deputy public prosecutor Yong Leou Shin prosecuted while Abd Aziz was represented by lawyer Salim Bashir. — Bernama
