SIBU: The High Court here yesterday adjourned to 2.30pm, Friday the sentencing on the four convicted of kidnapping a housewife in 2010.

Justice Datuk Yew Jen Kie had earlier received the mitigation from the defence counsels, and the written reply from the deputy public prosecutor.

The counsels urged the judge not to impose capital punishment but a custodial sentence without whipping.

In mitigation, they said the victim was confined less than 12 hours with no physical violence inflicted.

The accused, Ting Khai Sin, 20, Lun King Wen, 23, Tan Teng Chiew, 28, and Wee Nyet Lung, 26, were charged under Section 3 of the Kidnapping Act 1961, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

They could face the death penalty or life imprisonment with whipping. They were represented by David Kuok, Wong Sing Nang, Wee Wui Kiat, and Roger Lau.

According to the facts of the case, Ting and the three others reached a consensus to abduct 47-year-old housewife Wong for a ransom of RM53,400 at about 9.30am on July 17, 2010.

They rammed their vehicle into Wong’s car in front of a school to make it look like an accident.

They agreed to compensate Wong for the damage to her car, and the female member of the group offered to drive Wong’s car to a garage of their choice while Wong followed them in their vehicle.

Later, they extorted money from Wong.

When Wong said she did not have that amount, they threatened her with a knife and told her to ask her relatives to bank in the money.

Wong was freed around 7pm the same day.
