Five Indonesians and local man jailed for possessing firecrackers

KUCHING: Five Indonesian men and a local man were sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment by the magistrates’ court here yesterday for possession of illegal firecrackers last month.

The accused, aged 22 to 39, pleaded guilty to the offence before Magistrate Maris Agan who convicted them under Section 8 of the Explosive Act 1957, which carries seven years’ jail or a fine up to RM10,000 or both if found guilty.

They were found unloading boxes of firecrackers of various brands from a lorry at the premises of a house at Jalan Datuk Stephen Yong at about 5.35pm on Aug 16 this year.

Police arrested them and seized all the firecrackers as exhibits.

A search of the house by the police party uncovered more firecrackers.

Magistrate Maris Agan ordered their custodial sentence to take effect from the date of their arrest on Aug 16, and the Indonesians to be deported to their own country upon completing their sentences.
