KOTA KINABALU: A 19-year-old Filipino who is facing two charges of robbery and possessing a knife was ordered to be referred to Hospital Mesra in Bukit Padang for mental observation.

Sessions Court Judge Caroline Bee Majanil yesterday made the order on Nor Sidina Lapangie when the case came up for case management.

Earlier on deputy public prosecutor Afzan Abd Kahar informed the court that they had served all documents to the unrepresented accused.

She also pointed out that the accused had recently been discharged from Queen Elizabeth Hospital for attempted suicide by hanging.

Afzan said that based on the accused’s appearance, she was not sure whether he was capable of making his defence.

The accused meanwhile informed the court that he wanted to hang himself because he was implicated in the robbery case.

He said he was so worried and claimed that he did not commit the crime.

Nor Sidina is accused of robbing a 46-year-old Czech national of a sling bag at Jalan Pantai here about 11.35pm on July 13, this year.

He is liable to a jail term of up to 14 years and is also liable to a fine or whipping if found guilty of the alleged offence under Section 392 of the Penal Code.

On the second count, he is accused of carrying a six-inch knife at the same place and time.

The offence framed under Section 6 of the Corrosive, Explosive and Dangerous Weapons Act 1953 carries a jail term of up to two years and whipping, upon conviction.

He claimed trial to both charges on August 29, this year.

Nor Sidina is currently serving five months in prison for entering the state without any valid document, also at the same time and place.
