Borneo cup-like football tourney next year

KUCHING: There are plans to revive the Borneo Cup soccer tournament between states in this region and may be played with a different format.

Minister of housing, Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg is mulling the idea of naming the tournament as Borneo’s premier inter-city football championship to be played between cities in Kuching, Kota Kinabalu and Bandar Seri Begawan. And the event is set to kick off next year with Kuching playing host in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the formation of Malaysia.

“We may also scout for good players to be groomed further,” Abang Johari said when presenting RM40,000 to Kuching Division Football Association (KDFA) and was received by its president, Rakawi Ibrahim at a function held at Wisma Sultan Tengah, recently.

According to him, there is good potential for local players to one day play in the Malaysian League like Terenganu which also has a club side, T –Team competing in the ongoing Malaysia Cup.
