KUCHING: Kolej Sunway Kuching celebrates another proud moment when another of its student achieved a number two world ranking in the Foundation in Accountancy (FIA) – Paper MA2 examination.

This has also made Chai Min Chiung, 18, to become the only Malaysian prize winner for the FIA-Paper MA2, scoring 96 per cent. To date, the college has produced 20 Malaysian prize winners for Association of Chartered Accountants (ACCA) and Certified Accounting Technician (CAT), and three CAT world prize winners.

In sharing his achievement yesterday, Chai who was a Science stream student in SMK Sungai Maong said he discovered he had interest in accounting when he took accounting as an elective examination paper in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).

“Although I was in a Science stream class, I had an interest in accountancy and I took it as an elective subject. I later discovered I fell in love with it. I choose to further my interest in accounting at Kolej Sunway Kuching because that is their strength and I am confident with the college’s teaching quality and qualifications,” he said.

He explained that there was no special formula to his achievement, just pay full attention in class and understand what was being taught.

“It is very important to understand the topics you are learning because only then you can do well in them,” he pointed out. His lecturer, Jacqueline Chang, who also shared the proud achievement with him said she constantly gave him tutorials and motivate him to work harder and aim higher.

“I was always giving Chai tutorials and I saw his determination to do the best. I motivated him to work harder,” she said yesterday.

According to the college’s chief executive officer Joseph Lim, Chai was given a full scholarship in FIA for scoring 11 ‘As’ in his SPM.

He said the college also gave 50 per cent scholarship for him to pursue his studies in ACCA following his achievement in the FIA-Paper MA2.

“FIA is a foundation course to ACCA. It has nine papers in FIA and those who completed their FIA, they will have three paper exemptions in ACCA. There are a total of 14 papers in ACCA,” said Lim. Full time students will be able to complete their foundation course in one year.

There are four intakes in a year namely in January, April, July and October.

Lim said currently there are 250 students taking CAT and 80 per cent of them are from Science stream classes.
