LABUAN: Pakatan Rakyat (PR) will build a bridge to link Sabah with Labuan at Menumbok if it forms the federal government in the 13th general election.

Speaking to a large crowd of islanders here yesterday, Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim made the pledge on the bridge which is important to further spur the island’s development which will also contribute positively to the development of its nearest areas such as Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Sipitang, Menumbok and Lawas.

In reply to a reporter’s question, Anwar said former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had committed himself to develop this island after it became a Federal Territory, but after two decades the infrastructure here had not improved much.

“The bridge will speed up development in this island,” he said, adding that there are many things that needed to be done to develop Labuan as business and financial centre.

He also pledged that if PR wins in the coming election, he would reduce the oil price for the sake of the people, abolish the PTPTN loan, reduce the prices of goods and give free education to all.

Meanwhile, Anwar announced that a corporate figure and former Sabah Umno member would be a PR candidate against Umno from Barisan Nasional (BN) for the Labuan parliamentary seat.
