Dato proved that with mental strength and sheer determination, he was able to achieve his target and to win the race against all odds. He was visibly over the moon with his extraordinary effort upon reaching the banks of the Sarawak River yesterday.

“I couldn’t have done it had I not get any motivation and inspiration from my coach. He has been tremendous in helping me in my quest,” commented the 36-years-old swimmer.

For the record, Dato is from Limbang but has been residing in Padawan for the past few years. He lost his left leg below the knee in a logging accident in 1996.

For his impressive effort in winning the competition, he was rewarded with RM2,000 cash. He will indeed be an inspiration for many sports aspirants in the state especially those who aspires to take up swimming as a sport.

“In whatever we do, we must never let our limitations be deterrence for us to pursue our goals. We must always have the believe that everything is possible,” he added.

The cross-river event was introduced this year at the 2012 Sarawak Regatta to commemorate the event where the first Rajah of Sarawak, Sir James Brooke crossed the Sarawak River 142 years ago to flee for his life.

During the time, he swam from the location of the present Astana to the other side of the river.
