KUCHING: An engine problem and a back injury in Pahang last weekend caused Freddy Lawan to lose some valuable points in his quest to qualify for the Rotax Max Grand Finals in Algarve, Portugal end of the year.

The international go-kart ace from Sarawak finished third in the DD2 Masters race in the fourth round of the Rotax Max Malaysian Challenge held in Pekan last Sunday.

Prior to the race, Freddy was only one point behind fellow Malaysian Kelvin Choo in the championship rankings and although Freddy is still ranked second, he now trails Choo by 11 points.

Choo topped the rankings with 417 points while Freddy has 406 points and in third to fifth place are Chen Jet Choong (400), Mikko Nassi (338) and Kong Chun Keat (312).

Freddy’s challenge in Pekan was hit by the engine trouble in the second heat of the race and thus losing points and had to start from the back on the starting grid for the pre-final.

“It wasn’t just my day and everything seemed to go wrong for me,” lamented Freddy.

Moreover, it was also raining heavily during the race while the engine and chassis that Freddy had rented failed to meet his expectations in the race run over a bumpy and slippery track.

The race was won by Kelvin Choo while Eric Yong finished in second place.

Freddy was also disappointed with the result as he had
sacrificed skipping the third round of Asian Karting Open Championship which had resulted in his rankings dropping from first to third.

“I will be going all out in the final round of the RMC championship that will be held at the Sepang Karting Circuit next month,” declared Freddy.

Finishing on top would be the priority for him as he can overtake Choo and grab the grand finals ticket to Portugal.

“Although I will be under pressure to perform well, I am quite confident of achieving my target and provided that everything goes well in the final race,” he added.
