26-year-old man jailed for intimidating his parents

KUCHING: A 26-year-old man was sentenced to two years and three months in prison for criminally intimidating his parents and two acts of mischief to his parents’ property.

Noor Halifah Jonian from Taman Malihah pleaded guilty to three charges framed against him before Magistrates Maris Agan who presided over the case here yesterday.

For the first charge, Halifah admitted that he had threatened his mother with a chopper at his house at Taman Malihah at about 11am on Sept 14.

For the second charge, he committed mischief by burning a bed sheet costing about RM60 at about 11am on Sept 14 also in his house.

For the third charge, he damaged electrical appliances in the house, namely two sets of DVD players, and the door and door knob of a room costing about RM240.

The third charge was also committed in the house on the same day.

For the first charge, he received a year’s imprisonment while for the second and third charge, nine months and five months in prison, respectively.

Magistrate Maris ordered Halifah’s custodial sentence to run consecutively and to take effect immediately.

He was convicted of a criminal intimidation charge that comes under Section 506 of the Penal Code and Section 435 and 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by fire and causing damages.

The complainant who is Halifah’s mother said the accused quarrelled with his father at about 11am after he refused to get up from bed when told by his old man.

Seeing that his son did not obey him and was still lying in bed, the father got angry and told Halifah’s wife to pack their belongings and move out from their house.

Upon hearing his father’s words, Halifah got up and uttered harsh words against the father, walked to the kitchen to get the chopper.

Halifah used the chopper to threaten his mother standing outside the kitchen holding the door. In order to get out from the kitchen, he smashed the door and damaged the door knob with the chopper.

Halifah then ran to the living room, and grabbed the two DVD players which he threw to the floor. He also took the bed sheet from the living room and set fire to it.

Total loss was estimated at about RM300.
