KUCHING: Off-road enthusiasts from four countries are set to compete in the eagerly anticipated ‘East Valley (Tarat) International 4×4 Challenge 2012’ starting tomorrow at Tarat near here.

According to the event organiser, apart from local participants, competitors from France, the Philippines and Brunei will be taking part in the three-day event.

“The event format is a competition which emphasises more on driving skills, recovery techniques and team work between driver and co-driver. This is not a high speed rally or a competition for speed,” commented event chairman and spokesperson Stanley Sila during a press conference yesterday.

“The last day for registration is Sept 20, which is the first day of the race. As such, we still expect more contestants to register for the competition until the first day of the event. Until now, 40 contestants have registered for the competition,” revealed Stanley.

The challenge is divided into Class A, B and C. A total of eight stages are contested for class A and B while six stages are contested in class C.

“In this event, competitors will experience the might of Tarat (Serian) terrain from conquering steep hill climb, long undulating jungle navigation, swamp crossing and v-gullies crossings. The highlight of the event will be the 100-feet navigation through a pond,” added Stanley.

Stanley continued that the main purpose of the event is to see which vehicle is prepared well for the natural jungle terrain and obstacles provided for them.

The obstacles are prepared by an experienced team and officials.

All vehicles participating in this event are expected to be either a fully-modified vehicles, fitted with all high-tech gadgets ranging from high speed winches to multiple braking systems or vehicles which are semi-modified with either standard electric winch or Power Take off (PTO).

All off-road vehicle enthusiasts are welcomed to take part in the event.
