SIBU: Sarawak has all the qualities necessary to become a Taekwondo power house in the country.

‘Malam Waja Diri 1Malaysia’ organising chairman Alex Wong said the state’s superb achievement in the recent Sukma games spoke for itself.

“Sarawak was the overall champion, bagging 10 gold, two silver and two bronze medals. I believe we can go further and scale new heights in our achievement,” Wong said at the opening of the ‘Malam Waja Diri 1Malaysia’ function.

The event which grouped together various forms of martial arts was organised by ‘Kelab Taekwondo Sri Sibu’ in collaboration with Brooke Drive KRT and Sarawak Youth and Sports Department.

Temenggong Vincent Lau officiated at the function.

The first of such function held here was some 20 years ago.

Wong said organising such a function was never easy as it involved a great amount of collaboration, including the technical aspects.

However, he was glad that this time around, they had the participation of martial art bodies like Akido, Judo, Kuntau Iban, MuayThai, Wushu, Silamban and Silat Cakar Harimau.

“Here, the various martial arts practitioners can exchange their views and skills, ensuring the heritage would be handed down to the next generation,” said Wong.

On the objective, he said it was aimed at strengthening networking and bonding among the various practitioners.

“It is a platform to strengthen racial unity and foster national integration as it involves people from all walks of life,” he said.
