Waiter faces death penalty for drug possession

KUCHING: A night club waiter here faces the death penalty after being charged with possessing 63.03g of MDMA drug early this month.

Lam Tieng Siong, 34, who claimed trial to the charge, also pleaded not guilty to another drug charge for allegedly possessing 9.50g of Ketamine.

Yesterday Lam who hails from Sibu appeared before Magistrate Zulharil Sulaiman who adjourned the case to Oct 22 for further mention pending the chemist report.

For the first charge, Lam allegedly possessed the MDMA when nabbed in front of an entertainment spot at Jalan Abel at about 2am on Sept 6.

The charge comes under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which provides for a death penalty upon conviction.

For the second charge, he allegedly possessed Ketamine at the same time and place.

The second charge comes under Section 12(2)(a) of the same act which provides for a maximum five years’ imprisonment and fine upon conviction.

It was said the police team spotted a man acting suspiciously in front of the night spot and, when detained, he pointed to this trousers and four candy canisters inside his left pocket.

Nine transparent plastic containing crystal clear substances, suspected to be Ketamine weighing about 9.50g (gross weight), 80 green tablets, 70 brown tablets and 40 pink tablets, believed to be Ecstasy pills, were found in each of the canister.

A small weighing scale was also found in the pocket. The accused’s handphone and ATM card were also seized during the arrest.
