KOTA KINABALU: The Consumer Claims Tribunal yesterday ordered a laundry shop to compensate RM250 to a customer for a damaged piece of clothing which was sent for dry cleaning at the premises.

The claimant, Robert Ambrose, noticed a stain caused by an iron on the jacket he sent for dry cleaning in April.

He pointed out that the jacket should not be ironed and demanded a claim of RM600 to redo the jacket.

The claimant added that he had stored the jacket right after he retrieved it from dry cleaning without checking its condition as the jacket was enclosed in a plastic wrap.

When he wanted to wear the jacket in June, he saw the damage on the clothing. He went to the respondent’s premises and demanded an explanation for the damage.

Initially, the owner of the laundry shop offered him RM280 worth of vouchers that allowed him to dry clean 10 times for free.

The owner of the laundry shop also admitted that the jacket was ironed using a steam iron.

The respondent was subsequently ordered to pay RM250 to the claimant in 14 days.

In another case, claimant Noor Azmee Aslan was granted a refund on his deposit paid for a set of computer games ordered on Mudah.com website, which he never received.

Noor Azmee said he made the purchase on April 15 and paid a deposit of RM300 for the computer game that was priced at RM450.

As the respondent, Lai Cheng Siong, refused to refund the deposit, the claimant decided to file a claim of RM600 on all the administration fees incurred to get the refund.

Consumer Claims Tribunal president Datuk Dr Lawrence S.H. Thien then ordered the respondent to refund the RM300 deposit and management cost of RM100 within 14 days.

Meanwhile, the tribunal also ordered a shop to return RM245 to claimant Hadoit Eyong for a malfunctioned mobile phone.

The claimant bought the mobile phone from the respondent for RM490 but the phone broke down after a few months of usage.
