WASHINGTON DC: Approximately 400 people, including officers from the United States (U.S) Department of State and foreign dignitaries, joined in the National and Malaysia Day celebration organised by the Malaysian Embassy here Wednesday night.

The event was also attended by Malaysian businessmen and academicians here.

They were received by Malaysian Ambassador in Washington Datuk Othman Hashim and his wife, Datin Rohayazam Kamaruzaman.

“We’re very happy with the turnout for the celebration. Many of the guests are from government offices and Capitol Hill,” he told Bernama here.

The guests were feted with traditional food, such as satay, ‘nasi briyani’, whole roasted lamb, fried noodles and various Malay cakes.

Othman also described Malaysia-US ties as “very strong especially in the last few years”.

“Volumes of trade, visits and areas of cooperation are increasing. We’re widening the scope in investment, education and defence. Moreover, the US is also one of Malaysia’s biggest trading partners,” he added.

The envoy has hit the ground running in terms of promoting Malaysia since his arrival in the US capital in April.

The embassy has also organised a number of roundtable discussions and seminars as well as working together with government agencies and non-profit organisations to promote Malaysia’s interests. –Bernama
