KUALA LUMPUR: A number of areas in the west coast of the peninsula were affected by hazy weather yesterday.

The Air Pollutant Index (API) reading at 51 monitoring stations at 7 am showed that air quality was good in 23 areas and moderate in 28 others, said the Department of Environment (DOE) in a statement.

(API reading of between 0-50 indicates good air quality, 51-100 moderate, 101-200 unhealthy, 201-300 very unhealthy and above 301 hazardous).

DOE said the number of hotspots in Sumatra, Indonesia reduced to 302 on Wednesday from 631 the previous day.

However, it said the air quality was expected to remain unstable due to the warm and dry spell in the region until October.

DOE asked the people not to do open burning and report such cases by calling 999 or 1-800-88-2727.

The open burning prohibition order issued in June to Tudan, Permai Jaya and Kuala Baram near Miri in Sarawak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya remains in force, it added. — Bernama
