KUCHING: A convict currently serving jail time until 2018 was yesterday sentenced in the magistrates’ court to an additional five years in prison and fined RM4,000 in default six months’ jail for housebreaking.

Magistrate Syafiza Abdul Razak Tready handed down the sentence to Lai Jin Lee, 26, after he pleaded guilty to breaking into a house at Jalan Matang-Batu Kawa on Nov 10, 2009.

Lai had previously denied the allegation but his fingerprints were found at the scene.

Inspector Ahmad Ilias prosecuted.

In the incident, the homeowner discovered the back door had been forced open and that a 32’ television, two Acer laptops, one Dell laptop, a modem, a DVD player, a portable DVD player, RM800, a wallet, a digital camera as well as a gold bracelet and necklace – estimated to be worth RM4,080 – had been stolen.

Lai was arrested on May 5, 2010 following a police investigation.

Meanwhile, in another courtroom, court registrar Aida Montong granted another seven-day remand order, which the police had requested to complete their investigation, against a rape suspect.

The 50-year-old, who allegedly raped a 17-year-old foreign girl, had been remanded for seven days since last Friday.

No charge was framed against him yesterday as the investigation had yet to be completed.

The extended remand order will expire on Sept 27. The suspect allegedly impersonated a policeman to perpetrate the crime. He was arrested on Thursday last week at an Arang Road house following a police report.
