PUTRAJAYA: Sarawak has the highest Renewable Energy (RE) asset potential in Malaysia, particularly through hydro production.

Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Datuk Seri Peter Chin said the state’s geographical condition was its main advantage.

“Sarawak has huge potential in contributing to the generating of RE, especially in terms of hydropower,” he told Northern Sarawak Journalist Association (NSJA) members yesterday.

A 17-member delegation paid a courtesy call on Chin as part of their five-day media study trip to Putrajaya from Sept 16.

“To name a few, Sarawak has Bakun Hydroelectric Dam and Murum Dam as well as other high potential areas which are in the process of site research including Baram, Limbang and Lawas,” said Chin.

He added that compared to Sarawak, hydro power in the peninsula did not have the advantage of geographical factors as the area is limited in generating more energy.

Meanwhile, Chin said as there was high potential of RE production in Sarawak, there was no need for Feed-in-Tariff (FiT) in the state.

“FiT is only applicable in West Malaysia and Sabah since its inception in 2011 where it serves mainly for the domestic advantage to get cheaper electricity supply, thus with high RE potential in Sarawak, it is not necessary for FiT to be applied for the meantime,” he added.
