Local claims trial to three gang robbery charges

KOTA KINABALU: A local man claimed trial to three counts of gang robbery, impersonating a policeman and consuming syabu.

In the Sessions Court here yesterday, George Chung, 27, pleaded not guilty to robbing a local man of a Toyota Hilux, RM500 in cash and a cellphone at a staircase of a cyber café in Penampang at 10.30pm on Aug 31.

The alleged offence which was committed with another accomplice, who is still at large, was framed under Section 395 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum jail of 20 years and whipping, upon conviction.

The deputy registrar of the High Court Zulkifli Abllah who sat as a Sessions Court judge set Nov 1 this year for case management.

The accused was released on RM15,000 bail with RM8,000 deposited with with two local sureties, pending disposal of his case.

Meanwhile, at the Magistrate’s Court here, the accused was charged with impersonating a civil servant and consuming drugs.

On the first count, the accused pleaded not guilty to impersonating a policeman.

He was charged under Section 170 of the Penal Code which is punishable by a maximum jail of two years, or with a fine, or both, upon conviction.

The second count accused Chung of consuming syabu at Penampang police station at 7pm on Sept 15.

The deputy registrar of the High Court Korventt Wheezar E Jomiji who presided as a magistrate also fixed Nov 1 and Oct 19 this year, respectively for re-mention and case management and granted the accused’s bail at RM5,000 and RM1,500, respectively, with two local sureties each.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Syahrin Ali prosecuted.
