KOTA KINABALU: Barisan Nasional (BN) can wrest back the Likas constituency from the opposition in the coming 13th general election, according to Sabah Gerakan liaison chairman Datuk Gordon Leong.

He said this is because the constituents in Likas are aware that only BN can bring them development and resolve issues affecting them.

“BN is always working hard to resolve issues affecting the people and ensuring that they enjoy development as well as progress.

“It does not matter if the constituency belongs to the opposition, the BN government will do its best for the rakyat there and this is what we will continue to do,” Leong said during a meet the people session in Taman Antarabangsa Likas yesterday.

He said BN can, with hard work and sincerity, win back the Likas seat.

“If BN is given the mandate, we are ready to work harder and provide better service to the constituents in Likas,” he said.

Leong claimed that current Likas assemblyman Datuk Liew Teck Chan is unable to resolve the problems of the constituents.

“We are all aware that Likas was a BN seat in the past but it went to the opposition after SAPP left BN in 2008.

“Once out of BN, the elected representative is unable to carry out the responsibility the residents bestowed,” he said.

“We know that the constituents have suffered because the elected representative has not been able to function well in resolving the problems they faced.

“It is because of this that we, the BN component parties went to the ground to offer our sincere service to the rakyat,” he said.

Meanwhile, Umno Kota Kinabalu division vice chief Datuk Fatimah Shara Ahmad Noor, who was also present, said the good turnout at the event was a positive reflection of the solid support the constituents in Likas gave to BN.

Umno, she said, will continue to fight together with its BN component parties to ensure that the coalition will be victorious in the 13th general election.

“I hope that the residents in Likas will not be influenced by the opposition’s propaganda which is aimed at disrupting the peace and harmony that we have achieved.

“Don’t let rumours make us lose all consideration as to what is good or bad for us,” she said.

Fatimah also urged the people to continue supporting the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman as both have implemented programmes for the development of the country as well as state.

The meet the people session which was organised by Umno Kota Kinabalu and Gerakan was held at the Balai Muhibbah in Taman Antarabangsa.

Despite it being a rainy morning, residents from the area turned out in full force to participate in the event, which comprised a Zumba session, ‘gotong-royong’ to repair the dilapidated community hall and nearby playground, blood donation campaign, singing, and a magic show performance.
