‘Accept only the best for teaching profession’

KUCHING: The Kuching Canadian Graduates’ Association wants the government to make teaching an attractive proposition to attract the cream of the labour pool to the teaching profession, its president Philip Wong Pak Ming said yesterday.

In fully supporting the government’s intention of overhauling the country’s education system, he said better pay and better perks should be the essence of the Malaysia Education Blueprint (2013-2025).

“We strongly believe that education and education policies should never be politicised. It should be above partisan politics and done in the best interest of the nation and its people,” he said in a statement here.

The Blueprint, which will be finalised in December 2012, seeks to focus on efforts to turn around the system by supporting teachers and focusing on core skills under Wave 1 (2012-2015) as part of the education transformation.

Wong said underperforming teachers should be given continuing professional development (CPD) traning while those who still did not make the grade should be transferred to do administrative duties or removed.

“To be effective, we anticipate that every year not less than 10 per cent of teachers to be retrained and not less than five pe rcent to be reassigned to do other duties,” he said, adding that the Education Ministry should not hesitate to take action on the issue. — Bernama
