KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Land and Survey Department has set up a native unit in an effort to raise awareness and provide accurate information on land issues to the people.

Its director, Datuk Osman Jamal said the unit would give advice on land matters including the land code, and gather information on encroachment of government land.

He said if everything went well, the department’s mobile unit known as ‘PANTAS NCR’ would be launched in November.

“For a start, we will get three SUVs and 20 four-wheel-drive twin-cabs to operate in the Togod, Beluran, Keningau and Kota Marudu districts where many natives are saddled with land issues,” he told reporters after having a dialogue with the media here yesterday.

He said the establishment of the mobile unit was in tandem with Chief Secretary to the Government Datuk Seri Dr Ali Hamsa’s call for the civil service to go down to the ground to provide services to the people.

Osman said the federal government had allocated RM25 million to the department to address issues affecting Sabah’s natives, especially on land ownership.

The department has visited Indonesia to see the effectiveness of the Larasita (Serving People for Land Certification) programme, he said, adding that it was so successful that it received financing from the World Bank.

“The Larasita mobile office is equipped with computers,” he added. — Bernama
