PRIDE OF THE STATE: SMK St Joseph students and teacher pose with their trophies and certificates after coming second in the Energy Cooking Competition at Bukit Gambang Resort City, Kuantan.

KUCHING: Under the guidance of Loh Sin Ling, three students from SMK St Joseph Kuching, Kong Tse Hieng, Jeremy Ny Yung Ern and John Dan Adrian represented the state in the Energy Cooking Competition recently.

With their state-of-the-art ‘Solar Box’, the creative trio won themselves second place in the national competition.

The competition took place at Bukit Gambang Resort City in Kuantan from Sept 18 to 21 and was one of the activities of the National Level Science and Technology Carnival.

All the competitors had to go through a Kuching-level preliminary round to enter the state-level round. Winner of the preliminary round then competed against 14 other teams from throughout the country in the national level competition.

SMK St Joseph won first place in the preliminary round and was also the champion at state level, thus, earning them a place in national level competition.

According to the team, the Solar Box can absorb, reflect and retain solar energy efficiently.

“It can easily cook simple meal like rice, egg and instant noodle within a short period of time.

It is portable and easy to use, best for picnic and camping. Using solar energy to cook is a common practice in many countries.

“Our country is blessed with sunlight whole year round, so why don’t we start using solar energy to cook, which is free and environmentally safe,” the team said.
