3 years, 15 strokes for bomoh in misappropriation, cheating case

JOHOR BAHARU: A 38-year-old bomoh (medicine man) was jailed a total of 45 years and ordered to be given 15 strokes of the cane by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for one count of misappropriation and 14 cheating charges.

However, Omar Mohamad will only serve three years after Magistrate Mohd Azlan Shah Mohd Allias ordered his sentences to run concurrently.

On the misappropriation charge, Omar admitted disposing and pawning gold jewellery worth RM3,240 belonging to one Ibrahim Mohamed at Kedai Emas Golden Height at 56, Kampung Paya Mengkuang, Tanjung Kupang, Gelang Patah, around 10am on Feb 1, 2011.

He also admitted to four charges of cheating Ibrahim involving RM9,700 cash at Jalan Manggis, Kampung Pasir, Tampoi, here between April 25, 2011 and June 26, 2011.

On the remaining 10 charges, Omar, who is not married, admitted cheating Kalthom Mohamed, 57, and Salbiah Sabtu, 51, of cash and proceeds from the sale of gold jewellery worth RM140,538, in front of Bank Simpanan Nasional at Bandar Baru Uda, Bank CIMB at Bandar Baru Uda, Plaza Angsana and Batu 4 1/2 Jalan Skudai Kiri, here on June 17, 2010 and May 21 this year.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Ashraff Mohd Diah prosecuted while Omar was not represented. — Bernama
