Brothers jailed for stealing metal rods

KUCHING: Two brothers were sentenced to five weeks behind bars for stealing metal rods from a construction site of a shopping mall at Jalan Song last week.

The accused, Saidini Sapili, 33, and his younger brother Sapuan Sapili, 19, admitted to stealing seven pieces of scaffolding metal rods worth RM560 at about 2pm on Sept 25.

The brothers, who hail from Kampung Tambak in Pusa, appeared before Magistrate Gerald Empaling Donald who convicted them of a theft charge under Section 379 of the Penal Code.

Their custodial sentence was to take effect immediately.

A worker at the construction site saw two men wandering about the site with one of them carrying a gunny sack.

Seeking help from other people, he managed to make a public arrest.

The police were informed of the incident and both suspects were rearrested.

In the same court room, an elderly woman was slapped with a RM1,500 fine in default a month in prison after she pleaded guilty to possessing poisonous tablets two years ago.

Paulind Kipli, 65, was guilty of possessing the tablets when she was detained by police at a shop at Jalan Haji Matain here at about 1.35am on May 26, 2010.

She was convicted under Section 13(a) of the Poison Act 1952.

She settled the fine.

Meanwhile six persons including taxi drivers and van drivers were fined RM500 each, in default two months in jail for gambling at the taxi parking space at Kuching International Airport (KIA) on Thursday.

The accused, aged 34 to 50, pleaded guilty to playing ‘Holo’ and was convicted of a charge under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

They committed the offence at 2pm on Sept 9.

They all settled the fine.
