Civil servant jailed for hurting girlfriend

TAMBUNAN: A civil servant was jailed six months by the Magistrate’s Court here recently for hurting his girlfriend.

The accused, Daniel Primus @ Mohd Hafiz, 22, from Kampung Tondulu, Tambunan, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Mohd Hafizi Abdul Halim when the charge was read to him.

He was charged with committing the offence at about 4.30 am on May 29, 2011 in his Kenari car in Tambunan town.

Prosecuting officer Chief Inspector Ramona Albert told the court that the accused committed the offense due to jealousy, that his girlfriend had an affair with another man.

She said a day before the incident, at about 4.00 pm, the accused brought the victim and one of the victim’s cousins to Tambunan town for a car ride.

“Arguments broke out when the accused told the victim that he had found that the victim had sent an SMS to another man. However, the quarrel subsided after a while, “she said.

Ramona said the three of them decided to go to a pub that night to watch live bands performing, and the accused drank several glasses of beer.

She said about 2 am on May 29, the trio went back to the car and the victim then took over the wheel as the accused was quite drunk, and parked the car in an open area in Tambunan town.

They stayed in the car for about two hours and then the victim tried to wake the accused up to ask him to send the victim and her cousin home, but did not receive any response from the accused.

The victim and her cousin decided to get out of the car and walked home.

However, the accused suddenly woke up and punched, strangled and kicked the victim.

The victim’s cousin tried to stop the incident but the accused pulled the victim into a car, and her cousin had to follow the accused for fear of the victim’s safety.

In the car, the attacks continued where the accused punched and slapped the victim. The accused also burnt the victim’s right thigh using the car cigarette lighter, and threatened the victim and her cousin not to disclose the matter to anyone and brought them both to the quarters where the accused lived.

The next morning, the accused sent the victim and her cousin home. However, the events were discovered when the victim’s parent saw the victim crying in her room, with her face full of bruises.

A police report was made and the doctor’s report revealed that the victim suffered injuries to her face and body, as well as burns on her right thigh.

The accused is charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term not exceeding one year or a fine not exceeding RM2, 000 or both if found guilty of the offence.
