Former Socso executive officer jailed, fined for graft

SIBU: A former executive officer of Social Security Organisation (Socso) was yesterday convicted by the Corruption Special Court here and sentenced to a day’s jail and fined RM10,000, in default six months’ jail.

Showpi Hashim, 48, pleaded guilty to a corruption charge framed under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 and punishable under Section 24 of the same Act which provides for a jail term not exceeding 20 years, and a fine not less than five times the sum of value of the gratification or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

According to the charge, Showpi as a senior executive officer of Socso at about 1.20pm on Feb 25 last year at the front office of Bank Simpanan Nasional Sarikei branch at Barrack Road, Sarikei, corruptly obtained from Gon Anggun a gratification of cash RM1,000 as inducement to expedite a Socso claim by Gon and wife Melentan Gani in respect of the deceased Jolly Gon.

In mitigation, defence counsel Louis Jarau said Showpi was married with two children, and had been working with Socso since 1987 till hauled up for the offence.

Louis said Showpi was remorseful over the offence committed and had lost his job and gratuity.

The accused was operating a food stall in Kuching to support his family.
