KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman is confident Kolej Yayasan Sabah (KYS) will continue to achieve greater success, including the college’s dream to be a university.

He said the confidence stemmed from the increasing number of successful graduates from the college.

Musa said there were 506 graduands receiving diplomas and certificates at the ceremony yesterday compared to 372 last year.

“With the improving performance by KYS to date, I am very confident KYS would attain university status,” he said after opening KYS’s 17th Convocation at Auditorium Tun Ahmad Raffae, Yayasan Sabah, near here Tuesday.

According to plan, KYS owned by the Sabah Foundation Group, is scheduled to be upgraded as a university by 2013.

Musa urged KYS to always be sensitive to the current changes in the country and the global economic landscape.

In this aspect, courses offered by KYS must take into consideration the changes so that they are relevant to current needs, he stressed.

Musa pointed out that KYS must inject soft-skills, multi-tasking and entrepreneurship in its courses so that its graduates would be equipped to contribute to the country’s aim to produce quality human capital that could make the national mission a success.

“I am proud that KYS is successful in using value-added curriculum and a blended pedagogy which are more flexible in the academic, technical and vocational skills learning.

“This method has made it easier for the students to carry out several activities which are based on three types of learning, namely self-managed learning, face to face learning and continuous learning.

“I believe that what KYS is and has done will contribute towards the strengthening of academic, technical and skills education as well as providing opportunity for the people in Sabah, especially the youth, to achieve their ambition,” he said.

He also said through its technical and vocational skills courses, KYS had helped youth, especially those from the rural areas, to obtain some skills which would ensure them employment.

Musa also reminded the students that graduation did not mean the end of studying and gathering knowledge as the country needed human resources who are creative, innovative and with integrity.
