His vehicle, QME3088 (C4) Lexus LX470, held the distinction of being the only foreign vehicle to have completed the entire journey, while Dr Ling was the only one who had driven the vehicle by himself throughout the entire rally. His group won the Champion Rally honours.

This annual event was jointly organised by the National Sports Administration of the People’s Republic of China, the People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Asean Secretariat in collaboration with the Federation of Automobile Sports of the People’s Republic of China (FASC), Sports Administration of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Guangxi Auto Moto Sports Association.

The main objective of this event was fostering closer interaction between China and all Asean countries; to promote sports, cultural and tourism development through motor touring.

This year’s event drew 24 vehicles and 131 participants from China, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. The journey spanned 9529 km over 22 days of motor rally.

The convoy was flagged off in Nanning, China on Aug 17, and the journey took participants through Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Malaysia, and arrived in Singapore on Aug 28.

In the return leg, the convoy took off from Singapore to China on a different route, passing through Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam before arriving at Naning on Sept 7.

Driving the entire journey without any change, replacement or co-driver, Dr Ling was held in high regard and respected by the convoy participants as his team led them safely through the metre-deep flooded route in Vietnam.
