Lengthy jail term for possessing home-made gun, bullets

LAHAD DATU: The Sessions Court here yesterday sentenced a Filipino passport holder to a total of 14 years’ imprisonment and nine strokes of the cane for possessing ‘bakakuk’ (home-made gun) and live bullets.

Germelino Alistri Jr Nator, 40, pleaded guilty before judge M.Rajalingam to committing the offences under Section 8 and Section 33 of the Firearms Act.

The accused was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment and six strokes of the cane for possessing the ‘bakakuk’ and four years’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane for in possession of four bullets.

Inspector Soffi Jalal while prosecuting, told the court that the accused was arrested about 4.30am on September 20, this year inside an unnumbered house at a plantation in Sabahan, Kunak during a police raid after receiving information.

The police found the ‘bakakuk’ inside a sack that was hidden under a bed inside a room in the house, while the bullets were found inside a bag that was hanged in the same room. The accused admitted that the ‘bakakuk’ and bullets belonged to him.

Rajalingam ordered the accused to serve the sentences concurrently and to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving his sentence for deportation to his country of origin.
