Man arrested for stealing laptop at supermarket

KENINGAU: The police have arrested a man believed to be a foreigner, for stealing a laptop computer in a store at a supermarket here in August.

District police chief Deputy Superintendent Robert Salisip @ David yesterday said the 23-year-old suspect had no documents when arrested and was remanded for further investigation.

He said a 22-year-old local girl who worked as a supermarket shop assistant, lodged a police report on September 28 at 4.44pm, that in August, her laptop while being charged in the store, was found missing and believed stolen. She estimated her loss was about RM2,000.

Acting on the information, the suspect was arrested at 5.04pm the same day on suspicion of involvement in the case.

“Police investigation found that on an August morning, the suspect had gone to Keningau town to look for friend to borrow money to pay for an electricity bill but did not manage to meet the friend. The suspect then went into the supermarket and saw a laptop being charged in a store,” he said, adding that the suspect took the laptop without being noticed by any person in the supermarket.

He said the suspect later sold the laptop to a 23-year-old friend from a village here for RM300.

Robert said the suspect was being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft in a building and if convicted, can be imprisoned for not more than ten years, and fined.

Meanwhile, in another case, a nine-year-old pedestrian died at the scene when she was hit by a vehicle at Kilometer 2 Keningau-Apin-Apin Road here yesterday morning.

Robert said Nurliza Azuray died of severe head injuries in the 7.45am incident.

He said the victim was running across the road while the vehicle, driven by a 44-year-old Pakistani, was coming from Keningau town heading towards Apin-Apin when the incident occurred.

“The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.
