MSSM track and field meet attracts 635 athletes to SMK Tabuan Jaya

READY GO!: The U14 boys start-off in the 100m heat of the MSSM Tracks and Fields championship at SMK Tabuan Mini Stadium yesterday.

KUCHING: A total of 635 athletes from 26 schools are competing in the ongoing MSSM track and field meet held at SMK Tabuan Jaya (SMKTJ) mini stadium starting yesterday.

The two- day meet is jointly organised by SMK Petra Jaya and SMK Semerah Padi and is divided into under 14 and under 17 categories.

In the opening events, Aleh Kueh of SMK Sematan finished in the U14 Boys 1500 metre while Morris Rantai and Petrus Aidian of SMK Lundu and SMK Tun Abdul Razak finished second and third placing respectively.

And in the long jump, Leo Balang of SMK Tun Abdul Razak finished first, followed by Mohd Dzul Amirul of SMKTJ and Dominic Mick of SMK Sematan came in third place.

The organising committee chairman, Mohd. Rashid Ahmad said that the meet was aimed to scout for potential athletes especially among the under 14 from rural schools.

“ So this is one of the steps taken to hunt these talents and bring them to the main stream and of course to get them into serious sports does need dedication and also time to spend on sports field from all those involved with the development of sports,” said Rashid who is also SMK Semerah Padi’s principal.
