Couple charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt and trafficking maid

JOHOR BAHARU: A couple pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here yesterday to voluntarily causing grievous hurt and trafficking their maid.

Mohd Shukur Suradi, 28, and his wife Daeng Norulasyikin Bachok, 27, were jointly charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt using a knife, a golf stick, a clothes hanger, belt, hot water, hot oil, hot ladle and hot spoon on Marsini, 21.

Mohd Shukur, a car dealer and his wife, a primary school teacher, were charged with committing the offences at their house at No 7, Jalan Utama 5, Taman D Utama, Perling, here, between July and Sept 23, this year.

The charge under Section 326 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same code carries a maximum imprisonment of 20 years. Offenders are also liable to a fine and whipping, if found
guilty.

The couple was also charged with trafficking Marsini for exploitation purposes by forcing her to work as a maid at their house at noon on Sept 23, under Section 12 of the Anti-Human Trafficking Act 2007 which carries a jail term of not more than 15 years and fine, upon conviction.

Judge Zamri Bakar allowed the couple who have a nine-month-old baby bail of RM20,000 each for both offences with one separate surety each and set Oct 16 for mention.

Deputy public prosecutors Chuah Shyue Chien, Jasmee Hameeza Jaafar and Norashikin Ibrahim prosecuted while lawyers Noordin Hussin represented the husband while Wan Azmir Wan Majid acted for the wife. — Bernama
