Leong wins under 14 title at Kuching age group

KUCHING: Mark Leong clinched the Boys/ Girls under 14 title at the Kuching age group 4th leg tennis tournament after he beat Aiman Hamdan 6-2, 6-1 in the final last weekend.

En route to the final, the top seeded player who received a first-round bye blanked Hanif Pauzi 6-0, 6-0 in the last 16 and was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Matthew Chong in the last eight.

In the semi-final, he met Goh Tik Yen and won the game 6-0, 6-2.

Aiman made it to the final after beating Julian Chuo 6-0, 6-0 in the last 16, Jerome Bakar 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and Ami Khaidir 6-4, 7-6(7-2) in the semifinal.

Matthew Chong won the consolation final when he beat Johnathan Sia 8-1.

In the tussle for the Boys/Girls under 10 title, Warren Sim emerged champion after collecting 48 points in the competition played based on round-robin league.

Mitchell Brapui was the runner-up with 39 points while Angeline Ong came in third with 32 points.

Fourth to ninth were Elden Sim, Mohd Sufri, Goh Qing, Faridudin, Brandon Foo and Brigitta.

Kuching Division Lawn Tennis Association president, Dato Patrick Liew who is also SLTA chief gave away the prizes to the winners.

Matches for the Under 14 and Under 10 matches will be played this weekend at the same venue.

Organised by KDLTA, the tournament is aimed at giving the youngsters the chance to compete at development level and gauge their abilities and skills.
