KOTA KINABALU: A local man was electrocuted while mending a water pipe in a drain at Kampung Suang Parai, near 1Borneo hypermall yesterday.

Mokhsin Sibok, 31, whose body was found in the drain around 5pm by a group of boys, apparently died after he accidentally touched a live wire that was believed to be hidden in the drain.

The boys were playing football near the drain when they made the discovery and immediately informed the villagers, who in turn alerted the police.

It was said that Mokhsin was last seen fixing the water pipe burst around 2pm.

According to the victim’s grandfather, identified only as Pak Harrun in his 70s, he was informed of the incident when he returned from work around 7.30pm.

“My wife told me that someone was electrocuted, and as curiosity got the better of me, I went to check it out.

“I was shocked to find that the man who was electrocuted was actually my grandson,” he said when met at the scene yesterday.

Pak Harrun said he believed his grandson was repairing the pipe as there was water supply problem affecting the area for over a few days.

Meanwhile, city police chief Assistant Commissioner Jauteh Dikun, when contacted, said the case had been classified as sudden death.

“We have ruled out foul play but we are still carrying out investigation,” he said.

Jauteh said the victim’s body had been taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for a post-mortem.
