SIBU: Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) refuted the report front-paged by a Malay national daily stating it was in distress after leaving Cuepacs, calling the report “completely wrong” and “blown out of proportion.”

STU president William Ghani Bina yesterday expressing disappointment over the report  described the news as very damaging, adding that the allegation made on STU was based purely  on speculation.

He said he was compelled to voice out as many members had called him, expressing their discontent and objecting to what had been reported.

“I was swarmed with calls from many unhappy members who are angered by the inaccurate report.  We were all shocked by it and  do not know where this  reporter had obtained his  information.

“The report is misleading and completely wrong and will never be correct. There is no truth in the report whatsoever.  STU has never been in distress and will never be.

“In fact, STU with a membership of 23,000 statewide is one of the few worker unions in the country which
is powerful and very influential,”  he said in rejecting  the report.

Pointing out that the report was negative, Ghani stressed that their global influence spoke volumes of STU’s strength and recognition by education-related organisations.

“We are members of Education International which has a worldwide membership of 31 million. And in the country, we work closely with the Ministry of Education and Education Department.

“I am the chairman of the Joint Committee of Teacher Unions and Associations of Sabah and Sarawak and vice-president for Joint Teachers Union Committee.

“So you see, we are very powerful and influential not only in Sarawak and Malaysia but also internationally,” he said.
